IASTM is the use of tools or instruments to mobilize and re-shape the soft tissue. As the stroking of the skin occurs, the tissue begins to warm and the cellular matrix transforms from the jelly like form to a liquid form; therefore, the fascia becomes malleable. With this flexibility present pain and scaring is reduced, soft tissue fibers can be aligned, and function & mobility is increased.
Guasha tools have been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for thousands of years. Graston® has been the leader in the Western development of IASTM. Now the technique is expanding with choices, education, and a variety of tools.
